  1. It's important to know what area / region you live in / and the type of oak tree as there are many. How ever most oak's are very hardy. Rule of the thumb / cold weather is best for most replants and drastic trim jobs. Some oaks stay green all year where others shed very drastically. "Live Oak"-stays mostly green all year, "Black Oak"-the bigger of the two will shed and become very unsightly in the Fall. Fear not, trim the trees when the temperature is 50 degrees or lower/not freezing but chilly.

Be sure to use a reputable tree service or get advise from the locals.

    Good luck

  2. after full dormancy is reached... so that's after a good freeze has taken off or killed the leaves, they've fallen and you can see what needs pruned....

you want to do this in a cold time, so that there's no chance of insects being around to infect the tree in the fresh cuts where you take off branches... less chance then, too, of disease being present to infect your tree.....

  3. Where you live makes little difference.  Trim everything like that after the first frost, or in the dead of winter.
