When is the best time to visit Peru?

I really want to go and do the Inca trail next year, just wondering when would be the best time to go?

Well, the rainy season begins in November/December and tends to be until about March (this isn't a quote for Macchu Picchu, just from nearby in Cusco).  I would go after then.

As for the stupid comment about going when people aren't shooting each other or protesting in Lima, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, since it isn't as bad as he/she makes it sound and also the tourist districts tend to be very far from the government palace and busy areas where people would protest.

Plus, there tends to be an idea of talking trash about Lima, which I think is snooty and overly negative.

Be prudent with your money and your actions in public and you will find it to be a great place.

ONLY way to do the Inca Trail is with an organised group - and its a long slog that many give up on

"There is no single climate in Peru - the deserts, jungles, mountain villages and coastal cities are each under the influence of different natural forces.

And while there is no perfect time to see them all, February and March are fairly tolerable everywhere. The rainy season (a misnomer, really - it rarely rains) is June-September in Lima (humidity can be as high as 98% during this time) and November-March in the mountains. North and east highlands are subject to heavy rain from October-April. Along the Amazon, it's always hot and humid (it is a jungle, after all).

Be sure to take a sweater (or something heavier) if you're going to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. The greatest number of foreign tourists visit Peru July-September - which is also when Peruvians take their vacations. It's best to avoid this time, as prices are high and hotels are crowded."

I went in March a couple of years ago. The weather was alternately misty and sunny, with a little rain during two of the nights. The path was busy - even though it's off season. I would hate to think how busy it is during the summer.

February is when they close the trail and clean it, so if you want an unspolit trail, go as soon after Feb as you can.

As others have said, you have to weigh up your priorities. Low season = less crowded but not so good weather. High season = overrun with tourists but better weather.

Remember, whenever you go, it's cold at night at 12,000ft.

It all depends. The weather is best around June to August. However, this is also the time that the area is the most full of tourists, and finding a place on the trail can be difficult. January through to April can be a little wet - but if you anticipate well in advance this shouldn't be a problem. It really depends on you and what you hope to get out of the Inca Trail - a crowded yet sociable hike with great weather, or a calmer more personal experience with slightly misty skies and a chance of rain.
