Question:

When is the correct time to drop her from my insurance?

Here's the situation. When the divorce papers were filed she had a job. She has since been laid off. The divorce does not require me to insure her. If i drop her though she has no insurance and no affordable way to get any. I have the financial means to cover her for month, but I'm concerned about the consequences. If something happened could the insurance company come back and charge me for everything since we weren't actually married?

  1. Really good question, if something major happens she would not be covered. Since you are not married she would not be eligible for coverage. She is eligible for COBRA but that is an expensive option.

If you feel like helping her out you could buy her a short term medical plan for 3 to 12 months. Blue Cross, Assurant and Golden Rule all offer good plans that can be easily purchased on line. Since they don't cover pre-existing conditions and they only last for a short period the plans are pretty inexpensive.

  2. Is this the ex wife we're talking about?

Once the divorce is final, she should be taken off your insurance.  You have 30 days to notify them, of this life event.

If you do not notify them, and they pay bills for her that she's not entitled to (as she's no longer your wife) they will charge all the payout to the subscriber - you.
