  1. You'll see the full moon of July in California the evening of Thursday July 17.

Technically, the moment is 12:59 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time Friday the 18th.  The moon rise closest to that moment is Thursday evening the 17th.

Most people go looking for the full moon in the evening.  If you waited until Friday evening, you'd be twenty hours too late.  The closest time will be Thursday evening, which happens four hours before the official moment.

By the way,  because of the foreshortening effect of the curvature of the moon, the moon also looks full the night before and the night after full moon.  That's why some writers are ringing in to say they saw it last night.  You'll see the full moon in all its glory tonight.

If you happened to be in South Africa or places eastward, the full moon comes Friday evening, thanks to the effect of time zones.  For the United States, though, it's tonight.
