In my opinion, your best bet is travel during the summer months, because that is when the landscape is so beautiful--its rainy season, and the climate is very comfortable in the highlands during that time.  Avoid Easter week, since that seems to be the peak season for travel to the country, and thus costs are exorbitant.  Make sure you spend at least three days at Lake Atitlan.

During their  rainy season /hurricane season.  So check between June and October. The weather more then likely will still be good, but just the pending threat of hurricanes or alot of rain can keep people away and the prices down.

I always travel during Jan- first two weeks of march. The weather is hot and the airline tickets are so cheap. I fly from Seattle to Guatemala for only $350. I'm sure you can find better deals in CA.
