It depends on the options.

If it is an American-style option it can be exercised any time prior to expiration. All options on stock traded on United States exchanges are American-style and expire on the Saturday following the third Friday of the month. At expiration options that are at least one cent in the money will automatically be exercised unless the holded explicitly request it be allowed to expire.
