  1. We had the cicadas last year here in Massachusetts. I believe that there are a lot of different cycles and a number of different varieties with varied habits. If you want to know when in your area you will have to look in the newspaper archives in your town to find the last time they came out. If you can't recall, ask the old times, especially farmers if they remember. Then you will know what to expect.

  2. The primary cycle is 17 years whtn they come out "en mass"

However all cycles are not totally sychronous and there seems to be a smaller cycle that appears about every 7.  We had them in N carolina about 7 years ago.. but not in the HUGE numbers like come around at the 17 yr cycle

  4. Cicada and locust are not the same thing.

Cicadas return every thirteen to seventeen years.  In point of fact, they incubate for that long.

And the year of the cicada is right now.  This is the boom of the seventeen year cicada, and they'll lay eggs which will incubate till sometime in 2030.  So enjoy them.

Locusts are grasshoppers.  And they don't have a cycle.  They just swarm when it gets hot and humid and they feel like it.

  5. Hope the little b******s are gone by the next time I go to Chicago. Gross little red-eyed tarantulas!
