When is there going to be a replacement for the Nikon D40?

i've been forever deciding between the Canon XSi and the Nikon D40. i did go to the stores and played with both cams, and the result is that i like the "feel" of the Nikon better in my small hands. Yet the only things that are keeping me from buying it are the inability to use non AF lenses, the lack of an integrated Cleaning System and the low megapixels. When will Nikon upgrade the Nikon D40?

  1. If you have the extra $150 dollars to spend on the XSI, I definitely recommend it over the 2-year old Nikon D40. You can also consider stepping up to the D60, which has anti- dust measures and 10 megapixels, not sure about lens compatibility though.

  2. Nikon's update to the D40 is the D60.

F lens mount, no in-body auto focus.

Though the D60 added a sensor cleaning system and a few MPs.

  3. I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of megapixels or the lack of cleaning system. On an SLR the megapixels aren't really going to matter at all. Unless you're doing huge enlargements you won't notice the difference. Also, from what I've heard the cleaning system isn't hugely effective. I guess it's a nice feature but people have been using cameras without it for the past 80 years.

If you liked the feel of the Nikon, go with the Nikon. Feel is way more important than any of the features a camera could have. That being said, if you really want more megapixels you might consider going up to the D60.

  4. The entire family of old Nikon lenses for non-digital SLRs still work so that's a fine place to find a non-AF lens. If you wanted more megapixels, Nikon has a whole family of SLRs so why bother upgrading the D40? I have a D40 and I don't want to see the megapixels change. It has the largest pixel size in the price range. It's APC sensor is the same size as everything but the full format Pro-Series cameras. However, it only has 6 megapixels which yields pro-series pixel size in a budget camera price. Thus great light absorption capability. Only such camera like it!
