We're gonna be traveling through Kansas/Nebraska etc...in Late June...I'm "phobic" about tornados....is this a bad time of year to cruise through there? (guess I watched Wizard of Oz too many times huh?) What about Hurricane season down South? When is that at it's peak? THANKS weather people!

  1. llived in oklahoma most of my life--i would say about middle of april to the end of june.   they are bad when they hit but i doubt you will even see one--most people don't.   have a nice trip

  2. May/June is peak tornado season.  I have lived in Kansas for 50 years.  I have only seen two tornados in all those years.  Don't worry about tornados.  Watch the weather, you will be okay.  You are worrying for nothing.

  3. It's most active in the spring, but in Kansas and Nebraska you always run the risk of running into severe weather.

Hurricane season runs from June - November.

  4. I have this site that I go to if I want to look up the peak season of any state in tornado alley

    http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/hazard/hazardma...

You just click on tornado, then on any part of the U.S. and it will give you a graph  (It's kinda slow though, because it has to pull lots of data)

Edit: I went ahead and estimated the peak season average for Nebraska/Kansas and it was about Day 145-160 which is late May/early June.

Oh, and about hurricanes... I live in Texas currrently, and we have had a few scares recently, but nothing major... however, peak season for Gulf coast states occurs from June to October.

  5. In all my years of living in Kansas, I have been involved in a Tornado warning twice, seen a funnel cloud once, and never in person seen an actual tornado.

May and June are the 'peak' times, but the severe weather lasts all through the summer, mostly just thunderstorms and the like.

    You'll be fine.

  6. I live in Kansas and am also terrified.  Tornados are less likely then severe weather...which has been happening like once a week here.  And actually I think late june will be towards the end of the tornado season.  It is the worst in May.  If you pay attention to the weather you will be fine!
