When it comes to scalping event tickets, what's the difference?

Companies can buy up a bunch of event tickets from a place like ticketmaster, get on-line and sell them for double or even in some cases, triple the amount, that the ticket originally cost them and get away with it,but you stand the chance of getting in trouble,if you're caught doing the same thing, let's say in a parking lot or something. How is the companies way legal and the other isn't? Just curious.

  1. Firstly, no company would buy tickets from ticketmaster to make money. That would be like trying to make a profit on popcorn by buying it at the movie theatre!  The price is already jacked up so high.

Some companies do sell tickets for events at a venue, but that is by contractual agreement with the original seller. Some sports teams run sites where season ticket holders can sell tickets they don't need on the open market.  Nowadays, it seems scalping in the parking lot is permitted, if not even encouraged.  It can keep the demand high for the tickets.

OTOH, the venue may not like it, if there is fraud or if it gives the impression that the stands are not full, but they usually put up with it. Basically, what makes it different is that stadium owners have a right not to allow scalpers selling ticket in THEIR parking lot.  If they wish to throw them out, they can.  After all, scalpers are making money in the lot and not giving the stadium a slice of the profits.
