  1. The bigger the board is, the easier it floats, the more weight it can hold, and it makes it easier to catch waves, especially when you are in small knee- to waist-high conditions.  A bigger board is usually good for a beginner based on the characteristics I just described.  They are also usually easier to control and have a much larger "sweet spot".  When I say "sweet spot", I am referring to the area on the board where the surfer stands to ride.  On a smaller board, you have to be much more precise on where you stand as you will either bog down the nose and send your board sailing back behind you or if you are standing too far on the tail, you will slow the board down too much and lose the wave.  Shortboards are typically more designed for performance.  Turns, aerials, faster riding, carves, etc.
