  1. If this is a factory installed radio, I suspect a loose wire at the back of, or inside the actual radio.  If you are handy with a soldering iron, it's a five minute job once the radio is removed.

If you've got some aftermarket combination of radio, amplifier etc, you may be driving the levels too high, or have components mismatched, and a special circuit kicks in to protect the rest of the amp from blowing.

To do it yourself, you could find a Haynes or Chilton manual in a library (shows you how to reassemble your whole car, with pictures).

  2. Sounds like a loose wire to me. Not something you can easily fix as it would probably require removing the set and/or door panels. Could be something else. If the sound is gone for good, an in-line fuse, if intermittent, it's any body's guess.

You could try posting this same question in the automotive section. There are some very knowledgeable people over there.

EDIT: It also occurred to me that some cars leave the radio on, until you open the door. So you can be there, parked, engine off, keys out and as long as the door is closed still hear the radio. Maybe that's that's you mean and it's quite common on newer cars.
