I've been wondering this for a while now. I live in a city right by some mountains. When the sun sets, is the sunset time clocked as the time it went over/under the mountain, or the horizon on the other side of the mountain, or something else? Because obviously if it's clocked by the time it goes over the mountain, the time would be a lot earlier than it would be. So...anybody know? I hope that makes sense, lol. The best answer gets 10 points!

  1. sea level....

  2. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated for the time the sun actually breaks the horizon, based on longitude and latitude. In a mountainous region, you may see the sun earlier or later due to the landscape, but the time is set for where you are on a map, not your surroundings, and assumes a clear horizon.

  3. It is calculated as if it were sea level.
