When making a parallel park, how many feet away from the curb must the vehicle be?

1/2 ft ..but no more than 3/4 ft...unless you have snow or ice..then 1ft

California state law says no more than 18" from the curb which is basically the white/gray cement of the curb to the black asphalt.
