When making a web page what file format should your pictures be? Will a bitmap image work fine?

Or should it be a jpeg, jpg, gif, work better; if so which one?

  1. jpeg (jpg) are the most commonly used file formats.


  2. If you're doing an on line gallery displaying photography for the art, png is your best bet. (It has very little compression and the photos turn out better.) If your just uploading some hodge-podge images, jpeg is the best.

  4. You probably don't want to use a .bmp since that is used by windows computers. .JPGs and .GIFs are also "bitmap images" (the way the image is rendered) but are much more universal and websafe.

    .jpeg is the same as .jpg .

    If you have very few colors or transparency in an image, a .gif is best (256 colors max), otherwise, for photographs and such, .jpg is preferable.
