Question:

When making out, is bad breath really that noticeable?

For some reason, after i have done a thorough brush of my teeth (including floss, tongue scrap and mouthwash) about 30 minutes my saliva seems to have a sort of odor. I'll suck on the back of my hand and smell the saliva that goes onto my hand and it doesn't smell as fresh. But, usually my breath smells nice and minty for a fair while, it's just that my saliva doesn't taste minty, just like a not good, but not bad odor.

Is that normal for everyone or do i have gum disease or something?

  1. There may be nothing at all wrong with your oral hygiene OR your salivary glands.  Don't forget that saliva is a digestive enzyme.  Undoubtedly it's going to carry with it a bit of a fragrance.  You can neutralize it for a while by gargling deeply (without swallowing) using a sugar-free rinse agent like Listerine (the original yellow is about the only one that's sugar-free these days...so brace yourself because it's NASTY) or 'Tom's All Natural' but eventually that scent will return.  If you continue to question whether or not your hygiene is effective you may want to re-investigate between the molars at the very back for some bits of food detritus that you didn't get the first time out or that may have come dislodged after rinsing but didn't come free while flossing.

On a slightly related note, not flossing deeply enough will definitely lead to a little periodontal disease.  The dentist can clean this up rather swiftly with a technique called a plate scaling which is little more than a very focused and intense water bath.  They do give you a local for this procedure because it's very abbrasive and unpleasant if you have to feel them power-washing your gum line!  Good luck!

  2. u need to just to get a regular oral exam by ur dentist if u havent been in 6 months or longer, they will be able to tell  u if u have gum disease but i dont know what is causing the breath, its probably nothing serious.

  3. hmmmm, a good tip is to always carry around mints, gum and mouth sprays, -i do that lol-

As for the 30 minutes thingy, i think it might have somthin to do with ur eating habbits..

before seeing a doc, u must try to find out the sources of the bad breath, i had the same issue and it turned out that i have bad eating habbits, i eat food at different and inorganised times..

    GOOD LUCK!! :)

-and PS: ya bad breath is noticable when u make out!!-

  4. I don't think anyone has minty saliva.  So if your breath smells fine, and your teeth are clean.....it's fine

  5. I vote yes.

  6. you are what you eat , including the smell, so  brushing ect only covers the odor for a while, like you say, so if you don't want to smell bad stay away from certain foods like onions, and garlic, and other spices and herbs that produce  objectionable body odors.
