When making saltwater taffy do you have to grease the pan?

I know the first thing you do in making taffy is your pour the sugar and corn starch (if you are using corn starch) in a pan and then mix in the wet ingredients, and then you turn on the heat and stir the mixture until it begins to bubble. But before all that, even before you put the sugar in the saucepan, to you need to grease the pan with butter or oil? Also, any helpful tips about making taffy that you'd like to add would be appreciated! Thanks!!

  1. Greasing the pan won't do much as it will eventually just melt into the sugar and cornstarch mixture.  I would recommend using a non-stick pan for any kind of candy making.  It makes clean up much easier.

    My only tip is to follow the recipe carefully and make sure you are using a candy thermometer to verify the temperature.
