When making sentences in japanese???

how would you place each word in order... i know it goes subject object verb... but what if the sentence is something like...

The angry cat scratched the ball of yarn and ripped the string.

how would that be put together?

    Okotteru neko wa keito no tama o hikkaite, ito o hikisakimashita.

    You don't put the first verb in past tense.
