When moving from one city to another, how do I prevent from getting ripped off when I need to rent apartment?

I am moving from Calgary to Toronto and have looked at and found (online) apartments that would be suitable. But I don't how to go about securing a lease for my Toronto apartment from Calgary

.   Don't lease until you have visited the complex.  Have you read the stories on Answers from people who were shocked that the complex looked nothing like the photos and the apartments were filthy. Go in person.  Visit with the neighbors. If they are unhappy, they will tell you.
