  1. DONT MOVE!!!!!! lol it is the worst thing ever to do....... just kidding umm buy it all first

  2. I think moving first and then buying the furniture is the way to go.  You can have the moving company deliver directly to the new house.  You'll end up moving all the new furniture you just bought.  Not worth the extra hassle!

  3. Hi there,

I've been an interior designer for 19 years and have seen many folks run into this same problem.

I would always recommend getting your furniture AFTER  you move in.

The reason why this is my recommendation is because I feel it's best to live in the space first for a while.

It helps to see the space and its light, during the daytime, afternoon and evening first before you pick colors, furniture etc.

Also it's nice to see how you use the space.

Sometimes we envision using a room for a particular purpose only to find out that it's better suited for another purpose.

My final reason is that having the space there to really get a feel for how big the rooms are as they always seem bigger when you first see a place till you actually get into it!

Once you are in the home, you can measure the rooms out to get a good feel for what will fit in a room.

Purchase some graph paper a measuring tape and draw out what you want and where you want to put it.

That is what us designers do!

If you have pieces that you like already, make sure they will fit

well in the room (on paper first) before you buy.

That way you don't end up with a bunch of furnishings that you don't feel fit into the room stylistically or size wise.

  4. I highly recommend moving in first. Then you'll have a better sense of scale, size, how many pieces you need. Unless you have floor plans with detailed dimensions and a professional space planner.

I can see how the one big move would seem more efficient and instant gratification, but it can be a pain if you have stuff thats too big or too small. Stuff you buy before you move may not fit right in a room, like block a door or window, or maybe you can have a sofa, loveseat and chair, or a sectional maybe better.

  5. Personally, I'm all for the least hassle in the actual moving, so if you have the wherewithal to wait and buy the furniture when you get to the new place, that will really cut down on the frustration associated with moving.  It will also be cheaper; the less you have to move, the less it will cost to move it.

On the other hand, if furniture costs considerably more where you're moving TO than where you're moving FROM, then consider going the other way.  It might be worth the hassle of moving the furniture to save a bunch of money when you buy it.

  6. Unless you have all the measurements, wait til you're there so you don't buy something to big or to small for the room.

  7. Since you don't have it yet, I would think its better to move in and then buy it so there is less heavy lifting involved. Or buy the furniture right before you move in and have it delivered as your moving in. Make those furinture companies do all the lifting lol. Just as long as its not to expensive or they offer free delivery.
