When my cat eats he sometimes growls or hisses and runs away from his food, possibly like he is scared of it, he was a stray before i got him. I am worried becuase he sounds like he's hurt when he hisses like the food has bitten him.

Any ideas?

  1. my cat used to do this he had gingivitis, gum disease

  2. It sounds like there is something wrong with his gums or teeth. You should take him to the vet and get that checked. If there's nothing wrong there, he may just be a little nervous. My cat is a spaz who decides on a new fear every few days. This week, it's the beanbag chair. Last week it was the dresser. So it may just be him. But definitely get him checked out to rule out any physical problems.

  3. Best bet - call your vet. How often does this happen? It does sound like some kind of mouth-related problem. Try checking your cats mouth by gently pulling up the side of his cheek and take a look at his teeth and gums. Do his gums looks extremely red or swollen? Is his breath unusually foul-smelling? It is best not to self diagnose, but this can give you an idea of whats wrong, I would definitely check with your vet regardless. You can also try changing his food to something else, theyre might be a product in the food he doesnt like or is irritating his stomach, really theres a slew of things that could be wrong. He could also just have some negative associations with being fed - someone may have owned him before he was a stray and mistreated him. Psychological or physical, you should have your vet check him out.

Dental related issues in cats are common but easy to fix if found early your cat can be put on some antibiotics, have a good teeth cleaning and some teeth pulled and be fine. If you let the problem go infection can become a serious issue. Your vet may recommend that you brush your cats teeth, while it sounds silly it really does help and my cat never minded it much - he actually seemed to like the toothpaste quite a bit. Your vet may also recommend dental health cat food.

  4. That's weird because this happened to my just a couple of months ago.  My cat loves to eat, so I wondered what was going on.  I picked him up and his breath was awful.  I  smelled like something was rotten in his mouth.  I brought him to vet and he has 3 teeth that were very loose and his gums were sore.  The vet pulled the teeth, I mean all he had to do was a light tug without anesthesia and they just fell out.  I bought a toothbrush with beef flavored toothpaste at the vet's and I use it all the time.  He hated it at first, but now he knows he has to get his teeth brushed at least once a day.  I think this could be the cat's problem.  Good luck

  5. Your cat probably needs a good teeth cleaning from the vets office. No I am not joking they really clean animals teeth, while they are sedated of course. My dog that I rescued would yelp while he ate, I took him to the vet and he had a lot of rotten teeth. They pulled the bad teeth and cleaned the good ones. Your put could also have a gum infection or some kind of sore. Hope this helps.

  6. I would most definitely call the vet and ask them. Never heard of this. Probably used to the outdoors and eating bugs and stuff like that. But call the vet so he can be checked out. That's your best bet. You have to watch out for rabies also. I'd be care full

  7. there's a snake in the cats food, he's imitating it. lol
