When my cat plays with feathers?

My cat is only 5 months old (he will be 6 months old at the end of this month) and he has a toy with this ball and a poll thing with feathers on it, and he really like the feathers, he already broke one of the feathers off. When I play with him, he hisses at me and won't let go of it. He already dug his nail under my nail. I don't know what to do. Take it away from him or what?

  1. My cats do the same thing so what i do is play with them  until they start hissing or scratching and then i just leave the toy with them and they find there own way to play with the toy.

    Hope this helps :D

    Good Luck

  2. When my cats cross the line and get too agressive during play, I stop and walk away (combined with a "hey!" or "ouch!" loud enough to startle them).  Don't keep playing when they turn that agressive.  Just drop the toy... they will lose interest once you stop moving it.

Clip his claws, too.  That will save some bloodied fingers if/when he does swipe at you :)  One of my cats will do that... he'll get too in to play and will take a swipe (not allowed).  That always ends the play session.  If he's not good about claw clipping, try having a friend place a hand on the loose skin behind his neck and lift (just enough so that the front feet come off the ground).  This works with my cats... makes them go limp as they would when kittens so you can clip in safety.

  3. take it away.

    tell him no.

  4. when you were a child how did you act when your mom took away your favorite toy?? i bet you screamed and cried and wanted to keep it right well your kitten is doing the same to you! let it keep the feather its the kitty's favorite toy obviously!

  5. When he catches it, let him have it for a while.  He's pretending to kill the toy.  It's a natural thing for cats to do.  Wait until he loses interest in it, then pick it up and play again.

  6. Sounds like quite a possessive little guy! Best to let him win the battle and then playfully take it from him when he stops guarding it. Remember it is only a game, but one that your kitty takes seriously.

In the wild when they kill something they defend the kill from other cats. He is just pretending to do that with you!

  7. When you play with him, wear gloves!

  8. he probably is protective over it, because he thinks you wont give it back. take it, and give it back to him, show him that several times in a row, and see if he can learn to share and play.

  9. Both my cats adore playing with feathers.

Digging his claw under your nail is not him being nasty or hurting you on purpose - cats aren't like that, and the hissing is quite possibly just him playing.

At not yet 6 months he's still a baby, and although some things are cute, you do need to teach him discipline, easier at this stage than when he's older, but try to learn and remember the difference between kittenish playfulness and misbehaviour.
