Question:

When my cat sits, her one side appears to bulge out, is there something wrong?

The reason i'm asking...it didn't normally do this. Also, when we got her fixed (in Feb) the vet did the procedure by going in through the side. Could there be a complication? She also had tapeworm a while back, 2 litters..why we had her fixed..she was a rescue =)

She eats like a vacuum cleaner. And when she walks the one side just looks a little fuller. When she sits it is rounder and is fuller and sticks out more.

Any ideas?

  1. Could be scar tissue that is making her stomach stick out like that.  If she is acting ok, eating and feeling well, I wouldn't worry, but if she has any problems, get her to the vet asap!

  2. Your vet performed what's known as a "left lateral flank spay".  Though not yet widely used in America, this technique is very common in the UK and Europe.  Veterinarians have found that this procedure is more cost effective, time efficient, and safe for the cats. Spaying will not have affected your cat in the way that you mention.

Perhaps it's to do with her posture?  Our female cat often puts more weight on one side when she sits.  Our vet said it's probably just personal preference or a position she finds more comfortable.

If your cat seems healthy and isn't showing any signs of discomfort, I don't think it's anything to be worried about.  If in doubt, you can always ask your own vet for their opinion.

  3. sweety, not everyone is perfect, we all have mishaps.

  4. Its hard to say without seeing the cat. But if its just one side that sticks out than I think it could be a problem. Please take her to the vet.

  5. I have never heard of doing a spay through the side. And I have seen MANY cat spays. I would take the cat to ANOTHER vet and ask about the bulge on the side. It is not normal, whatever it is.

I prefer not to say anything bad about a vet, but I would really have another vet at another clinic take a look at her. I'm concerned.
