My Grandfather was born in Austria he says. His surname is Lazberger. His father was originally from yugoslavia. He does not talk about it much. I am wondering if the surname has become altered upon migration to australia in the 1900's, As there is a town in Austria called Lasberg. So there is the variation of Lasberger and also I am wondering if ours is another variation. We have no relatives apart from the ones that have extended from my grandfather and his brother here in Perth Western Australia. I am really interested to see if we have any history in germany as I feel there is this rich family culture I am missing. If anyone would be able to advise me or help me out I would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jennifer

  1. It's called Anglosizing a name to make the people here able to say it.

  2. www.familysearch.org had a whole 2 entries with the LASBERGER spelling, and 0 with LAZBERGER.

    International Genealogical Index - Germany

    Maria Anna Lasberger -

Gender: Female Christening: 22 FEB 1742 Bleichheim, Freiburg, Baden

Second listing was for the same lady, but gave   Nortweil, Germany as her birthplace.

LASBERG entries added a few more:

    1. Georg Friedrich, Count Of LASBERG --Birth:   Abt. 1686

<Altschloss Purgstall, Niederosterreich, Austria ; Spouse:  Konstantie Countess Of AUERSPERG;  Marriage:  26 Aug 1715

    2.  Rosine, Baroness Of LASBERG -

    4. Sofie Sabine Von LASBERG-SALAU -

    Denmark lists 4 LASBERGs

    Finland adds 4 Lasberg's.

    Germany has 20 listed.

US  Social Security Death Index lists 1-- Oskar LASBERG, Birth: 14 Aug 1884  State Where Number was Issued: Massachusetts  Death: Aug 1983

    Vital Records Index - Finland

      Sara LASBERG - Gender: F

Marriage: 28 Dec 1804 Vesilahti, Hame, Finland

So, you see, most immigrants DID change the spelling of their last names to sound more "Western" or easier to remember.

(NOTE--some of those above might have repeats among them because of Birth, Marriage, or Death entries only; or were submitted by more than one person).

  3. I can only say: That "I" think that it might be more than likely!!?!! Furthermore: I'm almost willing to bet that a letter or even two or three may've been mis`heard or understood when your grand father was telling his name to some recorder of records!?! Or just mis`spelt for some sTrAnGe reason!?! Maybe because his native tongue was'nt understood!?!. But I'm also thinking that his name MAY've been asked multiple times so the Gov. will have correct records of it down !?!.  ;-{ G/L !!  rRr...

  4. it is very possible my husbands last name has been mispelled, for instance his mothers last name was spelled with a b in it instead of a v on her social security card as well as her passport n other travel documents, my sister in laws middle named has been mispelled on all her papers as well, they come from el salvador btw. hope this helps =)

  5. Yes immigration misspelled and changed names all the time! I would almost bet your heritage is Danube Swabian
