Now, in the 21st century do you think this rule should still apply? And, why do you think a man would not ask for the lady's hand in marriage?

  1. Social standards are always in flux.  In the 1950s living unmarried (in sin) with a member of the opposite s*x was strongly frowned upon.  In the sixties that started to change.   It is now totally optional and avoids the long ugliness of divorce.  But a good marriage is a good thing for the right people and still much preferred if folks will be having children.    If that man does not ask for th e damsel's hand in marriage, he may not have inclinations to being married, at least with that particular person at that time.   Marriage is a big risk as divorce can be very destructive for a long time to both parties and guys take it a  lot harder thanis commonly considered.  Perhaps the gentleman is not prepared financially to enter into wedlock.  That is a very real and serious consideration as financial problems can be a real lover sapper.

Maybe he isn't  love or feel or realize he has found his counterpart.

  2. These days it doesn't matter if your married or not to your partner. If you love this person and do want marriage then go ahead. I think its the most beautiful to have someone on your side. Yea, of course the man has to ask the lady a marriage if he does really loves you. Take care and good luck.
