most likely a shafted gear box...possable clutch contaminated with out...failing engine mounts...

Though it sounds like a worn syncro ring in second gear so it isn't engaging properly. That'll cost you, unless you do it yourself.

Parts may be hard to come by aswell, another rover on the scrap heap, just thrash it in 1st and go straight into 3rd instead
