  1. if it makes sort of a clanging noise, kind of like pipes are hitting each other, than the sprinkler system is actually using some of the water from inside your house.

to fix this, a plumber needs to install a backflow preventer on the house line before it enters the house.

it will prevent water from going backoutside, but still let the water come into your house.

good luck and hope this helps.

or you could just find the pipes that could possilby be hittng each other and tie them down.

  2. That's a really odd one.  It's a guess, but maybe one of your automatic sprinkler valves doesn't quite turn all the way off at first.  The noise would be something in the valve vibrating as water slowly leaks though and the noise goes away when the valve finally completely shuts.  Only to start all over next time the valve is opened.

You could try running a short manual cycle on just one valve and see if you hear the noise after that cycle.  If not, keep going until you find it.  This at least tells you if the problem is in your pipes as your question implies or in a particular sprinkler valve as I suspect.

If you find one bad valve you can either replace it or get a rebuild kit.
