Question:

When naming babies...?

OK, this is gonna p*ss some of you off but I've got to hear some other opinions on this. Here goes...

Am I the only person in the world who thinks it's kind of important to give a baby a name that everyone won't mispronounce their entire life? Some jacked up name that means nothing and sounds silly?

Some of us might want to give our kids original names so they stand out, or ethnic names, or maybe name them after other family members. God knows celebrities are giving their kids dumb names!

Does anyone else think it's silly to just "make up" a name?

  1. Well personally Im a big fan of unique spellings and common/popular name. I dont see why its anybody else concern except for the mothers to worry about how and what they name their kids.

  2. Condescending much girl? We live in a world full of uniqueness, and regardless of whether of not you like it, it's not your problem, is it? I mean, you name your kids what you want and let others choose their own names. And jacked up names: honey, hate to break it to you, but at the very start of time, with Adam and Eve... names were made up, duh! Babies needed names and parents made new names up so their child wasn't nameless. And misprounce... I've heard some of the simpliest names mispronounced, so it doesn't matter what your name is! But I guess to your mind Ell is a made up name derived from Elle, right? Well, hey, my parents must have been crazy to spell Ell like that! BITE ME!!!

  3. I think the vast majority of made up names just look low rent.  I understand people's desire to give their child a "unique" name, but there are plenty of names out there to choose from that are not heard every day but are still actual names, not just a bunch of random consonants, vowels, or (God forbid) punctuation marks thrown together.

I understand that the ultimate decision of a child's name is up to the parents, but they have a responsibility to their child to at least consider the possible impact that the name they choose might have on their child's future.  After all, the child is the one who has to live with the name.

  4. To a point.   But we're moving into a global society  Different languages even have different sounds.  So I wouldnt worry over it.

  5. yes I think it is very silly.

I named my daughter Madison Olivia.

I think it is beautiful, I don't like names like Caylee or stuff like that.

    help me!

  6. Well my son has a name that everyone seems to mispronounce. His name is Keyvon and it pronounced Key-VON. Its made up but he's named after his father Kevin. I think if a name has meaning even if it's different thats ok. But names like Poppy and Apple are driving me nuts. And I also have issues with unisex names. I'd like to know if the person is male or female ya know? And I think it's crazy how people change the spellings of names. What is the matter with Addison? When they change it to Addyson? Is it necessary? I don't think so.

  7. Hmm...

I am going both ways on this one.  I think there are some names that are just wayyyy too popular, that I would never name my child.  But, then there are those names that sound made up, and I would never name my child one of those either.  I like the in-between names, that are different, but not unheard of.  I used to be the only Erin in my class, until I moved.  I always wanted there to be another Erin, but then when there was one, I hated it.  But, I think Erin is kinda an in-between name.  I do not know tons of them, as I do Sarahs and Emilys, but I do know a couple, which is nice.  I would not want a name that is mispronounced all the time.

  8. I think made up names are stupid!

But hard-to-pronounce names do not bother me.  They might have to pronounce it for people their whole life...but so what?

  9. I agree. Who wants to correct people's pronounciation and spelling of your name ALL the time? I honestly don't think a lot of people think this through when picking a name. They either make one up or see one that's spelled oddly and think "Oh! That's creative/unique."

Unfortunately, they don't realize that there are 100 other people thinking the same exact thing about the same exact name.

  10. I agree to a certain degree. I think that ethnic names, which are legitimate names in other cultures should be excepted from your rule.

If you have foreign blood and want to honour your ancestors, or if you just love a certain culture and language, you should go for it.

It seems to me (as a European), that especially Americans could use a little educating on other countries' naming traditions. If you have French family or are just a Francophile, give your child a French name and broaden the "name horizon" of the people around you.

The made up names on the other hand are getting ridiculous. Most are just nonsensical like the misspelled versions of traditional names.

If you really HAVE to use a unique name you created, at least make sure that it follows spelling and pronunciation rules. Some people seem to think that you can make up pronunciations too. False. Defying grammar is never a good idea.

  11. Certainly not. If a parent feels that their child should be named something difficult to pronounce, that's their jurisdiction. Just because you can't pronounce it doesn't mean its a bad name!

  12. I agree!!!!  It's hideous to make up names and sounds so that they can stick out!  They'll probably stick out enough b/c they're out of control little jerks.

Stick with normal, easy to spell and pronounce human names!

  13. I agree with the spelling and names that are hard to pronounce.  Unless it has to do with culture then I am totally for it.

As far as unique names and made up, I am all for them as long as they aren't too far out there and are easy to pronounce.  I don't like it when people add a bunch of letters to a common name to make it more interesting.

    ie Payton, Peightyn

    Ashley, Ashleigh

    Madison, Maddisyon

  14. I agree. I think them parents that name their child something like "patience","precious","heaven" ....I totally disagree with them names. I dont see what they get out of it. But yea, I totally agree with you.

  15. Some made up names are ridiculous, I agree.  Names like Audio Science and Inspektor Pilot (two really ridiculous celeb baby names) should be outlawed for the sake of the children!!

On the one hand, unique names can be very nice and suit a person from baby to elder.  My oldest son has the middle name Chili and it really fits him well - we use Chili more than his first name.  We got it from the movie "Get Shorty" - it's John Travolta's character's name, Chili Palmer.

On the other hand, some names that can't be spelled or pronounced only cause angst, confusion, and even a sense of lost identity.  Sounds dramatic but I had a friend who's name was Kylissen (KI-listen).  Since noone could pronounce or spell her name, she said she felt like she didn't even have a name.  She said that's why everyone called her "hey you" or "sweetie" or "honey."   She said she felt like she was Prince and noone knew how to pronounce her symbol of a name.  I convinced her to shorten her name to Ky and that seemed to help, but she still yearns for a "normal" name.

Interesting question:  You're getting a star!!

  16. I DON'T LIKE unique names, I like names that u hear everyday, u might not be the only Kelly, or Maria in class but at least ur name will not be mispronounced, and when meeting people u would not have to repeat ur name 1000x.

  17. each persons opinion varies on what is a jacked up name?  so its hard to draw the line.

the line should stop at the point where the parents name their kid "tahula does the hula in hawaii".

i don't really care about finding a name that is easier for other people to pronounce.  i don't find that to be important.  people will learn to say it.  we are a culturized society so therefore we will run into names we can't say.  all you have to do is say "how do i pronounce your name".

  18. I think it is ridiculous
