Question:

When not at home, which restaurants do vegans eat at?

I was just wondering because I see it as almost impossible to order any meal that's 100% vegan at most restaurants. The only menu item I can think of is a veggie burger ordered without cheese. But even that could be bad, because some veggie burgers are made with egg. Plus some of the vegetarian dishes offered at most restaurants, such as vegetable chili or lentil/bean soup, is made with chicken broth!! I mean, it IS possible to order just a garden salad with olive oil and vinegar dressing, but that's not substantial at all, especially if you're starving.

So any ideas about what vegans do?

  1. i would eat at any place with a salad bar.

that way, you can just have that. Its cheap and you can take as much food as you want.

  2. We starve.

  3. Mediterranean food is always great and mostly vegetarian.

They have hummus, baba ghanouj, grape leaves. rice pilaf, falafels. etc.

Most restaurants will readily make a vegetarian version of anything. Like at applebees, I order vegetable quesadillas. Its not on the menu but you can request it. The menu's not set in stone, things can be requested.

Ive tried Indian food. It was okay, but SUPER spicy. ALmost everything on the menu was vegetarian though, which was pretty awesome.

At Taco Bell, ANYTHING can be ordered vegetarian. I just ask them to replace the meat with beans.

People dont realize it, but becomign vegetarian actually expands your horizons for food rather than restricts you. Meat eaters are content with thier meat anwhere. But vegetarians constantly seek something variety, and thus try a much wider range of food.

  4. Definitely go with the non-American menus. Chinese, Thai, Indian, Mediterranean, Italian. Asia food places are great for vegetarian food. And Italian places for all kinds of pasta.

  5. It's very very hard to find any food outside of what I eat at home. (Plus it costs more and isn't as good for you). On the occasions I do (twice a year) this is where I go or this is what I order:

    Olive Garden (vegetarian meals, salad)

Different sandwich stores: wholewheat bread, tomatoes cukes and mustard... sometimes I'll have just tomatoes & cukes, sometimes just tomatoes and black olives.

    Wendy's: Baked potatoe plain

Other then that I don't eat out.

  6. i'm not vegan, but i go to a local thai food restaurant and they have a whole section of their menu dedicated to vegetarians and vegans. i'm guessing alot of asian restaurants must have some vegan entrees. hope that helps.

  7. I stopped eating meat several months ago because of health problems that were severely exacerbated by meat proteins.

I still crave meat once in awhile because I was forced to give it up. The whole forbidden fruit thing. However, I haven't slipped, and it's been surprisingly easy.

Since I stopped eating meat, I discovered Indian, Pakistani, Japanese, and rediscovered Middle Eastern cuisine. Almost anything you get on a meze platter is vegan, and it's also extremely delicious.

Many curries are vegan, if you like curry. I don't like curry, but I love Indian appetizers. You'll be in a carb coma, but they are very tasty and very substantial.

You can find tofu stir fry at any Thai, Japanese, or Chinese place. Just make sure that they don't use fish sauce or shrimp paste.

Most chain places have vegetarian items and are willing to make substitutions, but I'm not sure if they have any vegan items. Ethnic restaurants usually have much more vegetarian and vegan choices. When I go to chain places I usually order pasta Arrabiata, or pasta in marinara sauce.
