Let me take you way back. During the American Revolution there were two main factions, The Loyalists and The Colonists. The conservatives were The Loyalists.

Fast forward to the Civil War, ironically a Republican held the liberal ideology and sought to fight to preserve this nation's unity as well as to free the slaves. Those who were seeking "states rights" were the conservatives, the confederacy, the traitors, the terrorists, the KKK, etc.

Fast forward once again to WWII. The conservatives were n**i appeasers, attempting to remain neutral in the war. It took liberal FDR, to go and kick ***, in spit of Republican protests.
