Question:

When offering stuff on Freecycle, Who do you give it to?

I offered 4 items and have rec'd many responses. My initial thoughts are:

1. Give the items requested to the first responder

2. Give the requested item to the person that you think would best use it

3. Or retract the offer and keep it for myself. Just kidding, I wouldn't do that.

So what do you think would be the best way to handle this?

1 or 2?

And why?

Thanks,

Gef

  1. I generally go to the first responder first.  However, if someone from a not for profit wants something I've offered, I'd go to them first.  Also, if you want the item picked up quickly, you might give it to the person who will pick up the fastest.

  2. Leave it 24 hours after offering first!  Then I usually delete any emails that don't say please or thanks (manners cost nothing!)  Then just decide which one!!

On the other hand, if you want the item gone NOW, offer to the first responder!

  3. #1 gives an unfair advantage to the greedy ones who don't have a life besides their computer.

#2 is what The Freecycle Network recommends.

    #3 happens sometimes!

I try to wait a day, and offer it to someone who has good email manners. If a couple seem equally good, I offer it to the one who has made offers to the group.

  4. i wait until 12-24 hours after posting the message - i think it's fairer as not everyone can access the internet at all hours of the day, but might be equally worthy of receiving the item. after that, pick the one you like best (generally, ignore 'sob stories' - sadly they're often made up for the sake of getting an item)

  5. Normally I would just give it the 1st person to respond, it's easy & seems fair.  However, if there is some reason that you think another responder might have a greater genuine need for your item/s, it might be for the greater good to give them to this person instead.
