When on a highway in Illinois, is it illegal to drive in the left lane?

Well, I was driving in the left lane on a 2 lane Illinois highway, and my friend in the passenger seat said it's illegal to drive in the left lane. He said it's only for passing and getting over when coming to an on ramp so other vehicles can get on.

Is this true? The left lane is only for passing and you can get pulled over for driving in it?

Thanks.

  1. Well here's what the law says:" Keep right except to pass on limited access highways effective January 1, 2004." Not sure what limited access means, though. I was taught this when I took drivers ed in the early 90's but never knew if it was the real law.

  2. no its not illegal to drive there...but slower traffic is required to move to the right lane.

that is ,if you dont want to keep with the rated speed limit of the highway in question.

  3. Some states have the law but most of them it's just a suggestion. If you're a good driver you WILL NOT be in the left lane unless you're passing. ESPECIALLY if someone is behind you.

  4. I have yet to ever see anyone get pulled over anywhere in the US for camping in the left lane, whether it's technically against the law or not in a particular state, and I used to do A LOT of highway driving.

Left-lane camping is an especially bad disease in Minnesota.  It must be something hereditary there.....  Drivers in Minnesota are the worst for driving either barely at or often 5mph below the speed limit in the left lane of the freeway and clogging up traffic behind them for miles.

The "best" state I've seen as far as people actually not camping in the left lane is Ohio.  There are always a select few idiots everywhere you go, but most people on Ohio freeways tend to drive in the right lane(s) unless they're actually passing someone - then after completing the pass they usually get back over out of the way so others can use the left lane for passing too etc.,

  5. In a way of speaking it is illegal to drive in the left lane, this is a passing lane and if the cars are not doing the speed limit in the lane before the left land you are to use it to pass a car that not keeping the speed limit and than go back to that land, if the police See you reading a left lane and never change over to pass the car that's not doing the speed limit he can pull over for continually riding that left lane.

  6. You can get pulled over if cars have to pass you on the right. It's called impeding the flow of traffic. It's what old people are great at.
