  1. A knot is a measure of distance slightly longer than a land mile. If you are going one knot then you are traveling at one knot per hour.

  2. A Knot is one nautical mile per hour.

  3. for mph multiply by 1.15.

    there nice and simple.

  4. 1 knot is equal to 1.85 kph or 1.15 mph

  5. about as fast as it would have taken you to go ahead and search this question in 'ask'

  6. About 1.15 mph

  7. Just a bit more detail.   A knot is a rate of speed equalling one nautical mile per hour.   A nautical mile is not arbitrary as a statue mile is.  A nautical mile is one minute of latitude or 1/60 of a degree of latitude.    (lines of latitude are parallel and therefore equidistance where lines of longitude converge a the poles and so can not be used with the same ease to measure nautical miles or knots)

A nautical mile equals about 1.15 statue miles so a knot is approximately equal to 1.15 statue miles per hour.

So, technically, it's accurate to say a knot equals 1.15 miles per hour (when "miles" refers to statute miles) but it's also accurate to say a knot equals 1 mile per hour when "miles" refers to nautical miles.

Supposedly mariners should measure distance in nautical miles when on the ocean and statue miles when on inland lakes.  However, often (especially on the Great Lakes) they will use nautical miles even inland because it's just easier and consistent.   (It's easy to measure nautical miles by using the latitude scale on the edge of the chart).   Because mariners will just say "miles" not "nautical miles" the same way land lubber's don't say "statute miles", but just say "miles", there can be some confusion, and this is the reason to use the word "Knot" when talking about nautical miles per hour instead of using mph which would be technically accurate too, since you haven't defined which mile your are talking about.    The word knot, by definition means you are talking about nautical miles, not statute miles, so this eliminates any potential confusion

A knot is one nautical mile per hour weather you are on a ship, on a plane or floating in the ocean hanging onto a piece of wreckage in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.

  8. A knot is a nautical mile and is about 1.15 miles per hour.  It is a navy term based on the circumference of the earth.   This link explains it.

  9. 1Knot /h= 1.85 km/h = 1.15/h miles.
