  1. It will if you are just sitting out in the water with it.  Shortboards are typically much lighter and thus require the speed of the wave to be the force that keeps both it and you riding on the surface of the water.  I use a shortboard most of the time but have a funshape for the little days here in SC.  Not exactly the mecca for surfing but you get consistent good days especially out at Folly Beach.


  2. I'm 6'2" and ride a 5'7" board.  Sitting in the line up, the board is a good 5 - 6 inches under water.  But once in motion,paddling and up on the wave, it supports my weight just fine.

  3. longboards give you the luxury of always floating.  for shortboards, bouyancy alone will not support your weight.  you need the upward lift of planing created by forward motion to stay at surface level.  this is why longboarders can catch waves so much earlier.
