I was wondering when and who do you salute while on a US Navy Ship. Do you stay covered on a ship if your reporting for the first time in your dress uniform?

  1. In the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, hand salutes are only given when a cover (protection for the head, usually a hat) is worn.

I've read that the only service that it is proper for a Left Handed Salute is in the Navy (in specific situations only).

    Found it:

    FLAGS, PENNANTS, HONORS, CEREMONIES

    AND CUSTOMS - Chapter 12, Section 3

    1209. Exchange of Hand SSIut.es.

    1. The hand salute is the Iong-established farm of greeting and recognition exchanged between persons in the armed services. All pm-sons in the naval service shsll be alert to render or return the acluta as prescribed in these regulations.

    2. The salute by persons in the naval service shall be  rendered and returned with the right hand, when practicable. With arms in hand, the salute appropriate thereto shall be rendered or returned.

  2. Reporting for duty... you'll first salute the FLAG as you cross the brow... they you'll salute the Quarter-deck Watch officer and request permission to come aboard.

Oh, and never "Request Permission to cross your Patio Daddy-O"

For the most part, you remain covered, but ONLY salute outside, OR if under-arms.  And a salute is by tradition only required on the FIRST meeting of the day... afterwards you would address that officer with a simple and polite greeting.

They will TRAIN you how and when...

  3. If you are a member of the ship's crew, they usually train you to know when to salute and who to salute.

If you are a civilian, you aren't required to salute anyone.
