  1. leave it on save gas when you can

  2. Leave it on except when additional braking may be needed on downhill grades while towing.     All other times leave it alone.

  3. you will save more gas on the highway, not so much during city driving. It is best when used over 50 mph. You won't hurt anything by using it all the time

  4. Overdrive is just the transmission torque converter lockup control. A direct connection that feels like an extra high gear.

(All it does is make the inner and outer torque converter halves lockup together so it's a direct link and engine and transmission are turning the same speeds.)

Normally you don't need to touch it as the engine's computer or transmission's computer controls it automatically.

The only time you would want to turn it off is when descending a long or steep grade when engine compression braking would be desired.  It saves undue wear on the brakes when this is off going down long hills.

Also you would want to turn it off if descending a hill in snow (when you would also want compression-braking effect.)

The overdrive when it is on allows your engine to "relax" at highway speeds and helps you save wear on your driveline and allows greater highway fuel economy.

  5. well driving around town with the overdrive off you can save a lil more gas but you always want it on when your on the highway  but the gas difference is so little its too much of a bother
