Question:

When painting wood paneling, how much will the colour be modified because of dark colour of paneling?

I have dark coloured panelling, and want to paint it with either a yellow or red tone. I am wondering how much the colour will be affected by the dark colour underneath.

I have tried the Behr colour mixer, where it shows what colours will look like on the wall, but I wonder how accurate that will be in my case?

Thanks so much.

  1. Before you paint wood, you need to use a good primer first.  If you don't your paint will not stick.  When choosing your paint, have the store tint your primer close to the color of the paint.  That way, you just have to have one coat of primer and one coat of paint -- this saves A LOT of time, and paint.

  2. There should be no color difference if you use a good primer coat, for your dark paneling I suggest using kilz.

  3. With dark base colours you need to paint a few layers to cover it. Normally three to four. Then it will be the new colour. The paint tags are normally very correct but you need to cut it out so that there are no borders and hold it up against the wall. With white borders the colours often look different than you thought.
