When parents are not working why do they leave their children at daycares all day?

you know, i've been wondering the same thing lately. i, myself, don't work, and don't send my two years old to a daycare center. and i go to school two nights a weeks and it's my mom babysitting. but when he'll be 4 i'll send him to preschool 2 halfs days a weeks...

so hummm... i really don't know why they do that!!

Because working parents have 2 jobs and rarely get a break. An occasional day off is a real gift. However, they need to balance it with their child's need for some down time with Mom or  Dad..

Some parents believe that day care offers the child a chance to be socialized with other children, something they don't get at home.  Some need a day off, or personal time away from the child.  Some are lazy and don't want to deal with them at all.

Because it's easier to be selfish and to convince yourself you need "me" time.

Good question! My aunt used to do that when her kids were smaller, she always said that the daycare charges her no matter if they are there or not..so why not take them..because you are paying them for the kids not being there.

I wouldnt leave my kids there, but she always did.

They could be looking for work, they could have a sick parent to deal with, they could be depressed, they could be trying to "find themselves" again (having a child turns your world up side down).

Don't be critical and judgemental- you never know. I own a daycare centre and would wonder the same thing. Look beyond the obvious..."They're lazy" or "Why have kids if someone else is raising them". Parenting is around the clock- no breaks...so if a parent is seeking help...don't judge...your non-verbal messages will speak volumes. Work in partnership with parents and treat them with respect at all times.

Most stay at home mom love and want to spend time with their children. They also want the best education that money can buy for their child. Daycares are not babysitting services. They are preschools with lesson plans, structure, friends, social settings that are in a safe controlled environment.

Its hard to tell...some parents just need a break, which is fine to do once in awhile.  But some parents leave their kid in daycare a ridiculous amount of hours when they are not at work.   Some parents need to spend more time with their kids, and take the responsilbity for their kids.  Its ok if parents need a break, but ive seen kids in daycare 80+ hours a week. I think when a parent isnt at work or school, that they should be home with their parents.  While daycare offers socialization for kids, day cares arent good for kids in so many other ways.  I understand some parents dont have any other choice, but to leave kids in day care for hours and hours while a parent isnt at work isnt right.   No matter what, even if it has to do with the cost, sometimes its not any cheaper to have your kid in daycare less hours, kids need to be home with their parents whenever possible!

A child benefits better by socializing with other children their own age.  Too many children stay at home in front of the TV and get no interaction skills whatsoever.  

My 2 year old Grandson is in a Day Care Center every day except Saturday and Sunday.  She pays for the entire week in advance.  To pay by the day is more expensive.  So, whether she works 5 days or 2 days, he is in Day Care.  It has been good for him.  He is learning that his Mother is not the only disciplinarian in his life.  He has to follow rules like everyone else.
