  1. yes

  2. Yes, on a automatic it is the " parking p**e"..When the shift lever is placed in park, a rod pushes a spring against a small tapered bushing. If the park mechanism is lined up so that it can drop into one of the notches in the output gear section, the tapered bushing will push the mechanism down. If the mechanism is lined up on one of the high spots on the output, then the spring will push on the tapered bushing, but the lever will not lock into place until the car rolls a little and the teeth line up properly. This is why sometimes your car moves a little bit after you put it in park and release the brake pedal -- it has to roll a little for the teeth to line up to where the parking mechanism can drop into place.

On a standard it is a bit different...just slack being taken up...greater the wear, greater the roll.

  3. Yes.  This happens a lot more in some cars than other (like VW and Audi).

    good Luck...

  5. Yes Eric this is normal as the out put shaft rolls to the point the parking pawl lines up and locks.

On some vehicles, if you are on an incline and park, it is difficult to shift out of park once the vehicle has rolled back and the park pawl has engaged.

I advise people when parking an automatic, set the parking brake before shifting into park. This makes it easier to shift back out of park.
