When people ask me what im doing, im scared to tell them that im studying

...in the past, if someone called me up and i told them that im studying, they would spread rumors that im nerdy or have no life etc., and that really had an impact on me- was distanced from quite a few people at school.

Now in college. If someone phones me up and asks me what im doing, i just say "nothing much". Then they start telling some stories that go on forever, so i tell them "save it for tomorrow". I feel guilty, coz i'm studying, and they don't know it, so when they talk, they think i have nothing better to do, so it looks like im being rude by cutting them off.

What should I do?

Do you hesitate to tell people that you are reading/studying?

I hate this 'nerd' nonsense in the western world.

I thought the whole "nerd" nonsense changed by the time of college?  Anyway, why don't you just get in the habit of turning off your phone during the hours that you're studying, or at least checking the caller I.D. to see who it is before answering?  That's what I did when I was in school, b/c some people who weren't in school just didn't "get it" that I didn't have time to listen to their stupid drama...;-)

Well at least you'll be smarter than they are. I wouldn't be scared to tell someone I was studying because of what they might think. Hey, I thought you were smater than that!!! Enough with that nerd nonsense. Keep on studying!!!

well if you really care what people think of you when you get to be 28 your studing isn't called a dork or nerd.. it shows more educational background and shows that you know what your talking about it gives you credibilty!  unlike my spelling! lol

what's wrong with studing!  be who you are don't try to be something for other people!

you want good grades!  they don't.. either find more likeminded friends or join the highschool c**p in college!!  your choice!

In college its different, just tell them you are studying. In college lots of people actaully do study. And if there is a rumor going around at the end of the year show them your grade. Tell them I am going to study do I pass.You could tell poeple not to sound like a nerd or anything but Im studying so ill call you back. beat them to the punchline

i think you are just paranoid that people might not like you.  just tell them you're studying or don't answer the phone.

Tell them you're studying. College costs a lot of money, and if you're afraid you'll be considered a nerd for trying to get good grades, your priorities are whacked.

Just tell them you're reading.... nothing wrong with that.  You could be reading Sports Illustrated for all they know.  Don't worry about it.

Your irrational fear of what other people think is your main problem. Be honest, and give no thought to what others think. You cannot control that.
