  1. It is a setup that endures the same conditions as the experimental setup, but with nothing changed.   For example, if you wanted to test growing something and seeing if a 1/4 teaspoon of fertilizer made a difference, your control would be a plant that was grown along side without the extra, but with the same sun, temperature changes, water, etc.  If the experiment out grows the control, you know the fertilizer did it.

      Similarly - does heat treatment make iron rust more or less.  The control would not get heat treatment, but otherwise would be exposed to the same weather conditions as the experiment to see how much rust or how quickly it occurs.
