  1. With a 3- coat application there is not bag that will do as both the finish and the brown coat. A cement based  finish coat will be of a finer sand mixture than a brown coat and will offer no strenght. The brown coat is what will give the plaster its strenght by using a different sand and cement mixtures as well as fibers. They are two different products for two different  purposes. One for structural and one for looks.

If you use whats called a two coat or one coat application it is a total different mixture you can add pigment for what ever color you want directly to the cement or brown coat.  You can then hand trowel it on and then apply a texture by hand with the same mixture. You can tell if you have this type of plaster system because it will be applied over a 1" foam and 20ga wire where a 3-coat is applied over paper and 17 ga wire only.

In fact you where to go to a local building supply co. that has lath and plaster items, not Lowes or Home Depot  I am sure they would be able to help you and give you advice if you have a repair or project you are doing. I sure you would be suprised how helpful they can be.
