When platelets are given, how many units are give? 1? 2? and what are the parameters?

  1. Usually one unit is given at a time which contains about 300ml of platelets and fluid. The parameters depend on what the person's problem is. Generally in my experience if you are giving platelets to a cancer patient, we transfuse for a platelet count less than 15000-20000. (most of the time people will just say 15-20, but it is actually x10 ^3.) Then we keep checking the labs to see if they need more. If people are going through platelets really fast then we try to get them HLA matched platelets that will stick around a lot longer. I hope this answers your question
