When playing crazy 8s, can you play an 8 and call the same suit that is already in play?

My husband claims you can do this and I told him he's crazy. What would be the point?

Yes you can, an 8 can change any suit or stay with it

It is called crazy 8's because the 8's are wild, so they can be anything.  

I agree that there is little point in using an unless you are going to change the suit or it is your last card,  but if someone wants to make a misplay there isn't anything illegal about it.

I don't know the *official* rules about this one, but whenever I played with my friends that was not allowed. It's cheating!
