  1. general good rules to know:

Your ball goes out of bounds- One stroke and distance

You loose your ball- One stroke and distance

If you have an unplayable lie you have three options:

    One stroke and distance

One stroke and drop (two club lengths - no nearer to the hole)

One stroke and drop as far back as desired on line from hole thru the ball

If your ball is in a water hazard you have the same three options as above.

If your ball is in a lateral water hazard you have three options:

    One stroke and distance

One stroke and drop within two club lengths of where the ball last crossed the hazard margin (either side not nearer the hole)

One stroke and drop as far back as desired on line from hole thru the ball

If you hit the wrong ball in stroke play it is two strokes penalty, in match play it is loss of that hole.

If you ground your club in a hazard it is two strokes penalty, in match play it is loss of that hole.

If you give or ask advice it is two strokes penalty, in match play it is loss of that hole.

if you agree to waive a rule you are disqualified.

If a artificial obstruction interferes with stance or swing you get one club length relief (not nearer to the hole with no penalty)

  2. it costs you a stroke. and your ball goes out of bounds, not bounce

  3. stroke and distance

  4. simply add a stroke to your score for the hole and grab a new ball out of your bag

  5. 1 stroke

  6. one stroke penalty

  7. If you lose your ball on the fairway you will incur a stroke penalty and take your next shot from where you hit the lost ball. But if you choose not to go back to take your penalty shot (only on a friendly foursome) you may take it where you ball got lost and incur a 2 strokes penalty.

For out of bounds (OB), whether or not you lose your ball, you will incur a one stroke penalty and have to hit another shot from where you had earlier hit your ball OB.

  8. 1 stroke

    hit from same spot

    2 strokes

hit from where ball entered hazard

  9. just remeber this out in 1 in 2 hitting 3

  10. The penalty for hitting a ball out of bounds is called "stroke and distance".  This means you must count the shot you hit, take a penalty stroke for out of bounds/lost ball, and replay the shot from the exact place you originally hit the ball out of bounds from (or re-tee if it is your drive).   If you hit a shot from anywhere on the course that you think could be lost or out of bounds, you should announce that you are hitting a "provisional" ball.  If your ball turns out to be lost or out of bounds this provision ball will be in play (and you would lie three if it was a tee shot).  If you are able to find your first ball the provisional ball can just be picked up.  You should always be sure to identify the provisional ball and make sure it can be differentiated from the first ball.

In casual play, especially on public golf courses, if you can't find your ball it would be common to just drop a ball with a one stroke penalty where your ball was expected to be and not take stroke and distance to maintain speed of play assuming its OK with your opponents.
