We play backrow defense where the middle back plays back at the line and the other two play more up. We have two opinions. One is when the server is serving, middle back should play up incase a one ball comes back over and there server hasn't gotten back to his spot yet, middle back will cover it. The second is that middle back should play the backline and the server should really hustle to their position. Please help us settle this disagreement. Thanks!

  1. your server should run up to base after serving to be ready for the recive

  2. Unless he is serving from the next gym, your server needs to bust it back into the court to be a part of the play. If he is standing watching the play, you will get burned every time.

  3. The server covers the spot.

The middle back can play up and to the left or right, depending on the server's defensive position, to cover in case an overpass comes back immediately, but once the pass is in the air towards the opposing setter, they must move to base position and the server should be in base as well.

If a server can't get up to their base position before the set of the opposing team, whether playing perimeter or rotational defense, then that server needs conditioning practice.

Laziness is the only reason for the server not getting back into position.

  4. the server should serve from either the far left side or the far right side of the court...preferable the far left side WHEN YOUR FACING YOUR SIDE....that way, all they need to do is run up a couple of steps and there in the position, also, they will be closer to the actuall setting position close to the net so they dont have to run all over the court

the middle back has the over pass, which is when the other teams recieves the srve and brings the ball over in one hit, instead of the regular three hits

but remind your setter thats its DEFENSE FIRST so dont have them run to the setting position until one of your passers passes the ball to that position

  5. the server covers the spot...... for me its not that hard to get to the spot.... but i really do have to hustle

  6. server covers the spot

  7. Buddy, the first one you said will suit for this situation

Because if the middle back plays backline, there will be space even the booster plays covering the middle one playing little up.

if the first one is implemented, the server will come back to his position and the middle back will go to his appropriate position.

if the second one is implemented, it leads that the server to come back and the mid back to go back to position and then then booster, this will be collapsed

so the first one will b more useful in this situation

  8. the server serves, and then get back into place. you can't just stand there and watch your serve go over. it's just 3 or 4 steps.
