Question:

When playing volleyball, who is supposed to take the 2nd hit?

After the ball is served over the net and bumped on your side, who should take the second hit? Is it always the setter that needs to take the second hit (unless they call help) or is it the player the ball is closest to? Example. The ball is bumped and it goes to the back left corner. Should the player in the back left corner take it, or is it still technically the setters ball unless he calls for help?

  1. Well, sense you only want to set the ball from the front row.It would be whoever is in that corners responsibility to bump the ball.

  2. the setter all ways takes the 2ND hit. if he/she cant get to the ball in time they should call "help" to the person they think the ball will go to so they will be ready to hit it

  3. setter unless they call 4 help.  : )

  4. setter always gets the second ball.  well unless they yell help. and i mean it. i am a setter and it is frustrating when someone else takes the 2nd ball.  the coaches always yell at me saying im not doing my job as the setter.  a lot of the time i yell mine anyways and i still dont get the ball.  my team mates can be ball hogs.  but that can happen anywhere.  they think they are helping but its best if they remain a hitter or a defensive specialist.

  5. I'm setter and my coaches usually make me set a 5:1 when i'm in the front, and a 6:2 when I'm in the back. I asked them this a couple years ago when I was in 7th grade and they told me that the Setter is expected to get the second hit.  The team members expect them to get it, and if not the setter should call help.  But there are always some times when everyone knows the setter isn't going to get it and they call it early and get it.  Just let your setter know if you think you should take it.

  6. Setter should always get the second hit. Though the setter should realize if he will not get it. Only then, and if the setter calls for help, should another person get it.

  7. the setter is always suppose to take the second hit unless they call for help highschool ball will always teach you that the 2 hit is the setters if you are not playing in like an organized game then it doesnt really matter that much whos taking the 2 hit its usually the setter though

  8. The setter should always take the second ball, unless they can't get to it in time to make a good set.  the reason that there is a setter on a team is because they can do what they do really well.  Thats why you have positions.  You want the setter to take the second ball so that the hitters can have the best ball possible, to hit to the other side.  Second ball is ALWAYS (or 99% of the time) the setters ball.  (lets hope they can run fast!)

  9. the setter should take the 2nd hit unless they call help or unless the ball is coming directly at another player and there isn't enough time for them to move out of the way and for the setter to get there.

  10. The setter always takes the second ball unless they call for help, even if it is in the left corner. However, if the setter takes the first ball, it is the right fronts job to take it unless they call for help

  11. Setter should get it unless they call for help. Being one, I hate it when I get a bad pass, and then someone just goes and takes it because its 5 feet away.

  12. I believe that the setter shouldn't ALWAYS take the second ball. For example if the ball is passed in the back row, and the setter has a bad angle to get it to the hitter i would suggest a player with a better anglle and a greater chance of getting it to the front row take it.

  13. The setter should try her/his hardest to get to the second ball...but if the ball is too far away to reach even while running, the setter should call for help and then the closest player to the ball should set up the attack

  14. THE SECOND BALL IS ALWAYS IS HIT BY THE SERVER NO MATTER WHAT!!!

  15. it technically is the setters ball but it is not likely that he can/she can get it so the player in the back left corner should take it and do the the setters work to set up the spike.

  16. The setter should call for help if she or he can not reach it but otherwise the person who has first bump should pass it to the setter and then when she sets it to the third person the third hit should be able to come to a spike or something so it gets over the net

  17. setter

  18. The answer is the setter should take the second ball unless they call help.  In your example, the smart setter will call help early since it is 30 feet away from where it is supposed to be and right to a team mate.

  19. The setter always should get the second ball, so they can set up the middle or outside hitters up for a spike. If they can't get to it and they call for help, then anybody can get it.

  20. the setter

  21. the setter should always get the second hit if its possible. that way they can set the offensive hitters ready. the setter should set to your outside hitter and kill it. now, if its just ridiculously out of range for the setter to get to, then whoever is there that can make a clean set/pass to the front row should take it. the ideal situation is for the first hit to go cleanly to the setter, and then the setter sets, but from the example above, i think that the back row person should hit it. =] hope this helps.

  22. bump, set, spike. the 1st hit should be a pass to the setter. the setter sets the ball up, so someone else can spike it. the setter should get the 2nd hit. it doesnt always happen on my team though. :P

  23. If it is a good setter they would take it.  The second ball is ALWAYS the setter's.  If the setter calls for help then and only then should the other person go for it.  The person should also run out of the setter's way so he/she could help get the ball to a hitter.  In your example it is the setter's ball and if he/she calles for help then its the other person's responsibility to help.

  24. the setter should always take the second hit unless the pass (bump) was bad and she cant get to it and calls help.

  25. The setter ALWAYS gets the second ball unless they call for help. Bump, SET, Spike!

  26. The setter usually takes the second hit to set up the spike as the third hit.  If the setter can not make it over there in time, then the closest person can bump it.

  27. The setter should take the second hit if he or she can get to it depending on the pass. A good team mate would know if the setter was unable to get to it and would call it. However, it's hard to find a good team mate unless they really know how the game is played.
