Question:

When plotting a titration curve, how do you decide if the pH goes on the X-axis or the Y-axis? ?

It seems that some text books show titration curves with pH on the Y-axis while others show pH on the X-axis and I was wondering if there was a reason.

  1. They are both dependent variables, so seemingly either is correct.  But I have always plotted the titrant on the x-axis, and usually see it so plotted in print.

Reason?  You are actively adding the titrant, then reading the resultant pH, so the titrant is determined by you, whereas the pH is merely a result of your action....so titrant is less of a variable.

    Make sense?
