Question:

When pouring drink like coffee or water at a resturant is holding the cup rude?

I work at a restaurant and when pouring refills I tend to hold the empty cups off and away from the table because 1: I don't want to splash the customer and 2: pouring heavy pitchers across a table is a little difficult.

I hold the cup around the middle so I don't even touch the handle or the brim. Is this rude or is it acceptable?

  1. Some people may find it rude because they're drinking from that cup and you're holding it with your hands and then they hold it again to drink from it. It's up to you. You might want to pour directly into the cups that are close to you and ask them to hold up a cup in the back. It also depends on the people. If there is a family of roudy kids I doubt they'll care if you touch the cups, but if it's a business meeting you might want to try holding the bottom bottom of the cup on the table to balance it and pour.

  2. thats fine???

  3. Some people are sensitive about this. I would ask the restaurant manager what the SOP is. You could always ask the customer, may I pour you some more ...? Or just bring a new glass or cup if appropriate.

  4. I actually find it more annoying when the waitress shoves the pitcher right in your face to lean over and pour the drink (when your eating no less). Lifting the cup like how you do is a better way I think

  5. I would ideally prefer it be poured, but as long as u keep ur fingers towards the bottom of the glass, it is fine.

Better idea in my opinion: ask the person to slide the glass closer (I usually do that myself without being asked when the server is a bit far)..and this way you don't even have to hold it.

If you are really slow gentle and careful while pouring, you won't spalsh it.

  6. if your that worried over this then ask the customer to hold there own glass!

but really nothing wrong with that!

  7. it wouldnt bother me, if you done that at my table- personally i dont even think about things like that. just keep it sanitary, and like you said dont touch the part they put their mouth to....

  8. Acceptable to me :)  As long as im getting a refill.
