  1. She was the daughter of an earl (the Earl Spencer), and all the daughters of English Earls are correctly called "Lady [given name] [surname]". They keep the title "Lady" even after they marry, *unless* they marry a man who also has a title of nobility, in which case they ditch their own title and share their husband's one. If she had married Dr Khan or Major Hewitt she would have been "Lady Diana Khan" or Lady Diana Hewitt".

  2. she was a lady before she married Prince Charles and so when they split she then could retake the name lady

  3. A true blue blood. But a lot more class. What a lady.

  4. The late Diana, Princess of Wales was formerly addressed as "Lady Diana Spencer" before her marriage to The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. However, she was not born into the title of "Lady Diana", instead she was titled with "The Honourable Diana Frances Spencer" at the time of her birth. On the death of her paternal grandfather, Albert Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer in 1975, Diana's father became the 8th Earl Spencer, at which time she became Lady Diana Spencer.

Note: During Diana's marriage to The Prince Charles, she was titled and styled as "Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales", she was never "Princess Diana", a title she never held. Therefore, as a courtesy title bestowed upon her marriage to The Prince Charles, she was legally "Her Royal Highness the Princess Charles Phillip Arthur George, Princess of Wales." As Diana was no longer married to the Prince of Wales, and so had ceased to be a Royal by-marriage, Diana lost the style, Her Royal Highness and instead was styled, "Diana, Princess of Wales."

  5. I don't know. She was lady before she married. I know one of her biggest mistakes was marrying Prince Charles.

  6. Sorry to tell you, but she was not a Princess. She married a prince so her title was Diana, Princess of Wales, not Princess Diana.

  7. The first answerer is right....Diana was a Lady from birth....only became a Princess when she married Charles !

  8. She was a lady from birth - Lady Diana Spencer.

When she married Prince Charles, she became the Princess of Wales.

  9. Diana became a Lady on the death of her Grandfather on 9 June 1975 when she was nearly 14. At that point her father became Earl Spencer and she was given the courtesy title "Lady".

Before that she was just known as The Hon. Diana Spencer
